Winter weather in the Eastern U.S. continues to impact blood collection, forcing the cancellation of hundreds of blood drives, resulting in over 12,500 uncollected blood and platelet donations in March. In Eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey, 65 blood drives were canceled, causing over 2,600 donations to go uncollected.
Every day in Eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey, the Red Cross needs to collect close to 800 units of blood and platelets—regardless of the weather—in order to meet the needs of patients. Donors of all blood types are encouraged to give now to help ensure hospitals have an adequate supply of blood and platelets. To find a donation site near you, visit redcrossblood.org, call 1-800-REDCROSS or download the free Blood Donor App.
“Due to weather and illnesses such as the flu, donations are critically low and we are hoping to avoid an ongoing shortage by increasing donor turnout,” added Mayor Pikolycky.
