WOODBINE – Woodbine Elementary School will join schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day Oct. 5, 2016 (Rain date: Oct. 6).
Approximately 230 students from WES will be lacing up their sneakers and walking to school along with parents, teachers and community leaders, Principal DeVico, Crossing Guards, and Health and Safety Team members Mrs. Merollo, Ms. Pikolycky, Mr. Hinsley, and Nurse Strunk. Borough Council members have been invited to participate and Mayor Pikolycky has issued a proclamation.
The event will begin at 7:30 a.m. with kids, parents and community leaders walking from Webster Avenue to School & Madison Avenue to school. There will be a “walking school bus” for students to join as they continue along the route. Walkers will arrive at the school at 8 am. Upon arrival, all student participants will receive a free gift provided by the Safe Routes to School Program and then begin their morning routine.
Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community.
“I look forward to being part of this annual event which promotes the wellness goals promoted as well by the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign,” added Mayor Pikolycky.
The event is being organized by the WES Health and Safety Team in cooperation with the Safe Routes to School Program.
