THE WILDWOODS – Downtown Wildwood, NJ hosted a fun-filled, festive inaugural St. Patrick’s Day Block Party Sat., March 17, and also received a well-earned title: They are now officially the birthplace of a Guinness World Record for the world’s largest meat and potato pie.
A Guinness official was on hand in Downtown Wildwood, NJ – where the block party took place — to make the announcement, after tasting the 1,805-pound dish that was created in in several of Downtown Wildwood’s restaurants and then assembled to make one large pie. The record was certified upon determining that the pie was edible.
The event raised funds for a local nonprofit group to help stage after-prom events at Wildwood High School. Those interested in helping to devour the giant pie were asked for a $1 donation and received a spoon and fork in return. More than $1,500 was raised from this and the day’s other events for the group’s cause.
Downtown bar and restaurant owners, the event’s organizers, initially sought to set the record for the largest shepherd’s pie, but because the pie was made with beef instead of lamb, they gladly accepted the award for the largest meat and potato pie instead.
The now world-record holding pie was the centerpiece of a fun-filled inaugural FREE Downtown Wildwood block party on Pacific Avenue between Spencer and Lincoln Avenues, sponsored by the Downtown Wildwood Business Improvement District (WBID). The day’s festivities also included a fundraising Kegs-n-Eggs breakfast buffet inside the Cattle ‘n Clover Irish Steakhouse, a face painter, balloon artist, stilt walker, leprechaun, vendors and games. Evening performances also included Pentatonix, Season 3 Champions from NBC’s The Sing Off along with special guests Burning Bridget Cleary, the Soul Cruisers and Hydeaway.
“Nowhere else does Irish better than the Wildwoods, and events like these are custom built for our growing Downtown District,” said John Donio, President of the WBID. “The WBID was proud to sponsor this event which is sure to become another great Wildwood tradition, and we look forward to hosting more events like these in the future.”
Donio further congratulated the Downtown Wildwood bar and restaurant owners for putting the event together and local law enforcement for ensuring that this was a safe and fun event for everyone.
