WILDWOOD – Employees and leadership from the Wilmington VA Medical Center (VAMC) shared information with veterans about VA benefits and enrolling for VA health care, as well as providing flu shots, during a Veteran Benefits, Enrollment and Resource Fair Dec. 10. The event was held at the American Legion Post 184 in Wildwood and was an opportunity for southern New Jersey veterans and their families to learn about VA programs, and, if they hadn’t already, enroll for VA health care. Attendance was estimated at 120 people and 25 enrolled for VA health care for the first time.
“Events like this help veterans to connect with the services they have earned and deserve,” said Robert (Bob) Callahan, interim director, Wilmington VAMC. “Today, VA leaders were able to talk with veterans one-on-one, get a good understanding of their needs and desires, and then focus on improving how VA care is provided in southern New Jersey.”
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) operates three outpatient clinics in southern New Jersey. The clinics are conveniently located in Cape May, Vineland, and Northfield, where veterans can receive a variety of primary care and behavioral health services. Telehealth services are also available at each location to help connect veterans with some specialty care.
U.S. Representative Frank LoBiondo’s office sponsored the event for Veterans. “I appreciate the VA’s continued partnership to ensure South Jersey veterans have access to the health care and benefits they were promised. I was very pleased by Saturday’s turnout and the positive response from the veterans who attended,” said Jason Galanes, deputy chief of staff and spokesman for Congressman LoBiondo.
Representatives from the Wilmington VAMC, Philadelphia and Wilmington Veterans Benefits Regional Offices, Washington’s Crossing National Cemetery, Ventnor Vet Center, and staff from the Wilmington VA’s mobile outreach clinic answered questions, helped veterans resolve concerns, administered flu vaccinations, and provided assistance with enrolling for VA health care.
“We need to help veterans get through the barriers they may face accessing their health care services and benefits. These types of community-sponsored events are the perfect opportunity to do that and allow us to better connect and respond to veterans’ needs,” said Vince Kane, interim associate director at the Wilmington VAMC.
“We are working hard to improve VA services in southern New Jersey. It takes an entire community working together to provide veterans the services they’ve earned. Too many veterans don’t take advantage of them. I want to thank Congressman LoBiondo, his staff, and American Legion Post 184 for hosting the event. We look forward to working with the local community to do more events like this in the future,” said Callahan.
