WILDWOOD — Wildwood Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1 recently awarded seven $1,500 scholarships to June 2018 high school graduates.
The awards, part of the Joseph R. Walto Memorial Scholarship, were presented to the students after their first semester of college, according to a release.
Receiving awards were:
Danielle DeRitis (Rowan) and Nathan Lopez (Liberty University) from Cape May County Technical High School.
Bridget Fitzpatrick (Pace University) and Micah Rucci (University of Virginia) from Wildwood Catholic High School.
Daisy Jimenez (Rutgers) and Zachery Cripps (Atlantic Cape Community College) from Wildwood High School.
Joshua T. Hettenbach (William Paterson University) from Middle Township High School.
These scholarships are the 24th annual awarded in memory of Joseph R. Walto, a lieutenant in the volunteer fire company, who died while fighting the Ocean Pier fire on Christmas Day 1943.
That fire leveled 12 apartment houses and over 30 businesses.
