WILDWOOD – DoSomething.org, the largest organization for young people and social change, and ESPN teamed up for the third year to run the nation’s largest youth-led sports equipment drive through a campaign called Game-Winning Drive.
Wildwood Catholic Freshman, Jasmine Filippo collected 870 pieces of new and gently used sports equipment for the Do Something.org and ESPN Game Winning Challenge during the month of September. She distributed the equipment to the YMCA in Abington, Pa. and the Boys and Girls Club of Vineland. These organizations were thrilled and so appreciative to receive the equipment and hope that this will be an annual event. Vineland alone has 500 students in their recreation clubs.
Last year DoSomething.org members helped over 17,000 kids in underserved communities get access to the gear they need to play sports. Participation in sports has many benefits and can improve a young person’s health, performance in school, and self-confidence. Each person who collects gear is entered into a drawing to win a $5,000 scholarship. Participants receive one scholarship entry for each piece of equipment they collect. Filippo is second on the leader board to a girl who collected 1,000 items. Filippo realizes that even though the scholarship has not been rewarded yet, she is already a winner because she took action and got much-needed equipment to kids who need it most.
