STONE HARBOR – Local green teams throughout Atlantic and Cape May counties are invited to attend a free event sponsored by the Sustainable Jersey Atlantic-Cape May Hub. “All About Water” will be the focus of the Oct. 28 event at the Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor.
“Water is an essential resource for human activities and ecological functions,” said Donna Drewes, co-director of Sustainable Jersey. “Shortages can have critical implications for public health, local economies and for the environment,” Drewes added.
Population growth and development in New Jersey have increased demand on a limited water supply. Water supply issues will be addressed during a presentation by the Pinelands Preservation Alliance’s Rich Bizub. Water deficits in numerous watersheds highlight the importance of water conservation for New Jersey’s citizens the whole year round. Sustainable Jersey actions regarding water conservation and educating the public on the value of conservation will also be discussed at the meeting.
Dr. Steven Yergeau, environmental and resource management agent, Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Ocean and Atlantic counties, will share information on some of their projects to improve watershed health by using sustainable and native landscaping as well as techniques to alleviate soil compaction and improve water infiltration. In addition to these presentations, local green team members will share information on some innovative water conservation initiatives they have implemented. Resource providers and representatives from Sustainable Jersey will be on hand to answer questions and to provide additional information. Light refreshments will be served.
“It’s so helpful to be able to speak directly to local green team members who have implemented actions to protect and conserve water,” said Lauren Skowronski, program director for community engagement at Sustainable Jersey. “That was really the impetus for forming the Atlantic-Cape May Hub; to connect members of local green teams in the two counties to share ideas and to support each other,” Skowronski added.
Regardless of whether your municipality has a “green team” or is registered with Sustainable Jersey, everyone is welcome to the event at the Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor, Oct. 28 from 6 to 9 p.m. There is no cost to attend, but interested residents and municipal officials are encouraged to register online http://www.sustainablejersey.com/nc/events-trainings .
