WILDWOOD CREST – The Borough of Wildwood Crest’s Department of Public Works, in conjunction with Clean Ocean Action, will host a Beach Sweep Sat., April 21 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Volunteers of all ages are needed for the event. Participants collect, remove and record valuable data about debris, which is presented in annual reports and used to advance federal, state and local programs to reduce litter on New Jersey’s beaches and in its waterways.
Community, school, business and other organized groups are encouraged to participate in the event. Groups of 10 or more are asked to pre-register by calling Clean Ocean Action at (732) 872-0111 or by registering through the COA’s web site at www.cleanoceanaction.org. Smaller groups and individuals do not need to pre-register.
Check-in for the April 21 Beach Sweep will be at 9 a.m. at Wildwood Crest Centennial Park at Fern Road and Ocean Avenue. Volunteers should bring gloves and wear weather-appropriate clothing. The event will be held rain or shine.
“Wildwood Crest is looking forward to working with Clean Ocean Action on such a great project,” said Wildwood Crest Commissioner of Public Works Don Cabrera. “We have always been very dedicated to keeping our beaches clean and we encourage as many people as possible to help us with this outstanding community event.”
Wildwood Crest will also host another Beach Sweep on Oct. 20.
According to the Clean Ocean Action web site, more than 90,000 volunteers have participated and removed over 4.5 million pieces of debris from New Jersey’s beaches and waterways since the program began in 1985. Beach Sweeps is one of the longest-running programs of its kind in the world.
According to its web site, Clean Ocean Action is a leading national and regional voice working to protect waterways along the New Jersey and New York coastlines using science, law, research, education and citizen action.
