COURT HOUSE – Volunteers from Volunteers in Medicine gathered at the home of Dr. Noreen Sisko, Board Trustee on Dec. 5 for their Annual Holiday Celebration. The Volunteers get together at least twice a year for camaraderie and good cheer. Most bring a covered dish. This party was no exception – the food was plentiful and the atmosphere merry. The Sisko home was beautifully decorated for the holidays. This year, rather than exchange gifts, the Volunteers collected food for the Food Bank and Pajamas for a local Girl Scout Troop. Marge Carter, Volunteer Coordinator proposed the idea and thought the volunteers would bring an item for one or the other charities – most brought wrapped PJ’s and canned goods/gift cards for the Food Bank. Marge exclaimed as she gave out door prizes “ You are all VIM’s VIP’s!” Executive Director, Jackie Meiluta said “ Our volunteers are wonderful. They freely give of their time to ensure access to healthcare; many also volunteer at other groups and when asked, they always give!”
Volunteers in Medicine of Cape May County (VIM) is a free health care facility for residents of Cape May County who have no access to medical insurance and who meet financial eligibility criteria. VIM’s focus is on primary health care, emphasizing disease prevention, health promotion and patient education in an easily accessible facility with the same dignity and confidentiality afforded in the private sector. The VIM clinic provides a compassionate and nurturing environment for patients, volunteers and staff based on a culture of caring.
Now in its tenth year, VIM has treated more than 4,000 patients with 24,000 cumulative visits, all at no charge. The need for VIM’s services continues to grow. Currently, approximately 600 residents of Cape May County consider VIM their primary care doctor. Every day more and more people reach out to VIM for much needed health care.
