UPPER TOWNSHIP – This past week was the opening week of the 2015-16 Upper Township Green Hornet Wrestling season, and they have quite the swarm this year, boasting the largest team in their 36 year history. Head wrestling coach Frank Sannino said, “Our team has grown by 5-10 percent each of the last five years, but this season our numbers exploded to over 85 wrestlers”. Not only have the number of boy wrestlers increased, so has the number of girls. Prior to this season, there have only been four female wrestlers in Upper’s history, with the first being Allison Sannino in 2006. This season there are nine female wrestlers on the team, led by 2015 USAW NJ State Champion Jade Phelps who has wrestled for 5 years.
The Hornets lost some great talent to graduation from last years undefeated (7-0) varsity team including, Conner Boal, Jesse Bishop, Nick Loesch, Ryan Keil and Kevin Young. Most of the teams starting line up is returning including Nick Sannino, Aidan Nelson, Jade Phelps, Aiden Meyers, Steve Novakowski, Joey Garcia, Braydon Castillo, Paul Labonne, and Jackson Smith with many others looking to contribute at the varsity level.
Upcoming events for the Hornets include, a community clean up of the B.L. England Fishing Pier in Beesleys Point Nov. 22. The team is also gearing up for its 11th Annual Upper Township Green Hornet Holiday Open Wrestling Tournament on December 12th at the Upper Township Middle School which draws over 400 competitors and 2,000 spectators from 5 states.
