UPPER TOWNSHIP – March 9, 4 local teams battled it out for the league championship. Parking was scarce, the gym was packed and the gym was electrifying. Upper Hornets faced off against Galloway in the semi finals, winner would move onto the finals. With the score going back and forth in the lighter weights, Upper came out on top 50-35 and moved onto the finals to face Mays Landing. The match for 1st place went exactly how any finals match should be with lots of good matches. The Hornets fell behind 38-21 before rallying back to take the lead 39-38 coming into the very last match at heavyweight. Unfortunately Upper doesn’t have a heavyweight, causing them to forfeit and that made Mays Landing the victors with a final score 44-39. It was a tough loss for the Hornets but they are very optimistic about the future, with only several 8th graders moving onto high school and a very young, talented team Upper will be a force to reckoned with for years to come.
Several Hornets also traveled to Wilmington Delaware for a District qualifier in hopes to place top 3 to advance to Regions held April 9 and 10 in Salisbury Maryland. 1st place honors went to Nick Layton, Braydon Castillo, and Nick Sannino. Wrestlers who reached the finals, but took 2nd were Josh Roman, James Picinich, and Wes Tosto. Battling back in the wrestle backs to take 3rd, Andrew Siteman, Jackson Smith, and Mason Afanador. Hornet alumni and Ocean City High School freshman standout Nick McCardell and Nate Bellwoar took a very tough 4th place. With hope to qualify for regions wrestlers will travel to Paulsboro High School March 20.
Andrew Siteman traveled up to the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton to chase after a state title. Unfortunately, he lost his matches but getting there is a major accomplishment itself.
