WILDWOOD CREST – Your Thanksgiving turkey has been roasted, eaten and reduced to leftovers. It’s now time for everyone to get outside and work off a few of those extra calories. Let’s turn our attention to another turkey… the turkey vulture!
The Friends of Cape May National Wildlife Refuge will present a special free Saturday morning family nature program, The Poor, Misunderstood Turkey Vulture on Nov. 30, 10- 11:30 a.m., at the Two Mile Beach Unit of the Refuge.
Turkey vultures tend to be birds that most often elicit the phrase, “Oh, it’s only a turkey vulture,” or worse, “Ewwww, a turkey vulture!” No, they’re not quite as regal as eagles. But they are actually graceful, important and fascinating animals. They have inspired poems, songs and stories, some of which we will read and re-tell. There’s even a new dance craze sweeping across southern Cape May County, The Turkey Vulture Wobble, which we will try our best to interpret during the program! Come and learn about this poor, misunderstood bird, then take an easy guided walk on the trail to see if we can spot a few on our way.
This walk is free and perfect for all ages. As always, dress for the weather. Heavy rain cancels the event. After the walk, the public is invited to warm up in the newly-opened Nature Store at Two Mile. Please meet at the Visitors Contact Station at the Two Mile Beach Unit of Cape May National Wildlife Refuge, 12001 Pacific Ave (Ocean Dr), Wildwood Crest, near the former Coast Guard Loran Station. For more information or directions, please call 609-513-9349.
Cape May – Governor Murphy says he doesn't know anything about the drones and doesn't know what they are doing but he does know that they are not dangerous. Does anyone feel better now?
