SEA ISLE CITY – The Sea Isle City Garden Club will present a Sycamore tree to the Sea Isle City Historical Society during a special dedication program on Sept. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Historical Society’s Memorial Garden, located on the grounds of the Sea Isle City Library, 4800 Central Avenue. During the ceremony, a Sycamore sapling will be dedicated in recognition of the Garden Club’s past and present members.
The Tree Dedication Ceremony will feature live music and other memorable aspects, including a sing-a-long of the nostalgic tune “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” which mentions a Sycamore tree and brings to mind images of days gone by. There will also be a brief presentation and acknowledgement prior to the unveiling of a plaque at the base of the tree. Afterwards, everyone will be invited into the library’s main meeting room, where light refreshments will be served.
“Everyone in the community is invited to attend the dedication ceremony,” said Garden Club President Marlene McHale. “We have a great appreciation and fondness for the Historical Society and their Memorial Garden. In fact, many of our members are also Historical Society members. The Garden Club helps beautify our town, and the Historical Society preserves our past – and both groups benefit Sea Isle in a special way.”
In addition to a new sycamore tree and attractive landscaping, the Historical Society’s Memorial Garden also has artifacts from Sea Isle’s past, including a statue of King Neptune, which was imported from Europe by the town’s founder, Charles Landis, and a mast from The George F. Skolfield, which ship-wrecked off the coast of Sea Isle City in 1920. Additionally, the garden has a pathway comprised of bricks engraved with the names of local residents, visitors, organizations and other supporters.
According to Historical Society President Mike Stafford, the personalized bricks, which cost $200 each, are excellent reminders of loved ones – and there is still plenty of room for additional bricks on the garden’s pathway.
“Buying a memorial brick is a good way to honor a family member or friend,” said Stafford. “It’s also a way to become a permanent part of Sea Isle City’s history.”
