American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk Empowers Community To Take Action
OCEAN CITY – More than 5,000 Ocean City residents came together on October 16, 2016 at the Ocean City Boardwalk for the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk and raised $288,000 to help create a world free from the pain and suffering caused by breast cancer. Since 1993, more than 12 million Making Strides supporters have raised more than $750 million nationwide.
“This event was a moving example of passion in action,” said Danielle McDevitt, American Cancer Society Community Manager. “Our Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk ensures no one faces breast cancer alone by bringing the community together, funding innovative breast cancer research, promoting education and risk reduction and providing comprehensive patient support to those who need it most.”
While significant progress in the fight against breast cancer has been made, more needs to be done. Excluding cancers of the skin, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women and is the second-leading cause of cancer death in women. According to the American Cancer Society Cancer Facts & Figures 2016, an estimated 246,660 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 40,450 will die from the disease this year. In New Jersey 7,420 women will be diagnosed this year and 1,280 will die from the disease.
