STONE HARBOR — The borough’s first Coastal Living Festival took place Sat. and Sun, May 7-8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the 96th Street business district between Second and Third avenues.
One of the event’s highlights, sponsored by Hoy’s 5 & 10 was the children’s Treasure Hunt on the Beach. At 2 p.m. sharp on Saturday, loads of little pirates gathered in a special sand plot on the 96th Street beach where bags of booty were buried.
Guarded by some real-looking pirates, the plot was where hidden treasure was buried.
When Capt. Stone, the pirate of the day, gave the order, and the sword swooped downward, the mass of youngsters dug furiously in the sand unearthing their special bags of treats.
A food court on the east end of 96th Street offered an array of treats for everyone that included seafood, burgers, barbecue, chicken, funnel cakes and more.
On Saturday, the Stone Harbor Garden Club held its annual Plant and Bake Sale, one of the group’s main fundraisers that allow it to plant the Second Avenue traffic islands in a profusion of colors at no expense to local taxpayers.
The borough and Stone Harbor Chamber of Commerce hosted the weekend event.
