Shore Animal Control Provides Free Straw for Pets of NJ Residents

By Press Release

SEAVILLE — Shore Animal Control Services will begin Dec. 4, 2015 distributing free straw for outdoor dog houses and cat houses for residents in municipalities they service. The straw will help keep pets insulated during the cold weather. These municipalities include: Estell Manor, Buena Borough, Woodbine, Lower Township, Upper Township, Wildwood, N. Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and West Cape May.
Every year, there are unfortunate cases where pets are reported frozen to death during the winter months. Shore would like to do everything possible to try to help in situations such as this. Straw provides more warmth in the winter and blankets can become moldy in the winter wet rains. Straw should be changed often for optimum warmth. Blankets are not advised as they retain moisture and can often make the situation worse.
Dr. Nick Holland, co-owner of Shore Animal Control Services does not advocate in any way leaving pets outside continually during any extreme temperatures. But for residents that might have to leave animals outside during part of the day, the straw will at least provide some temporary comfort. Several municipalities including Upper, Lower, and Wildwood have Extreme Weather Ordinances in place which prohibit keeping animals outdoors during extreme low or high temperatures.
If any resident of Woodbine, Upper, please contact Shore Animal Control at 1800- 351-1822 If anyone suspects animal neglect or cruelty, please contact the New Jersey State SPCA at 1-800-582-5979
