SEA ISLE CITY – Who knew that playing pinochle and bridge could do more than simply strengthen the bonds of friendship or pass the time? Clearly, the members of the Sea Isle City Women’s Civic Club knew – and this fall they once again played a variety of games to help others in need.
For years, the Sea Isle City Women’s Civic Club has been raising money for charity by hosting their popular Fall Card Party. This year’s autumn fund raiser, which took place in September, attracted over 120 party-goers, who each cheerfully paid for an enjoyable luncheon and the chance to play a variety of sociable games, ranging from Bridge and Gin Rummy to Mahjong and Rummicube.
According to Civic Club President Dolores Meyers, $2000 was raised during this year’s card party, which was held inside Sea Isle’s Community Lodge on Sept. 15. Those funds were recently donated to Family Promise of Cape May County.
Family Promise is a non-profit organization that unites local volunteers with area social services to provide shelter, meals and comprehensive support to families without homes, enabling them to achieve sustainable independence. Family Promise of Cape May County consists of over 800 volunteers from 33 religious organizations, who serve as either host or support congregations for 3-4 homeless families each week. More than half of Family Promise’s “guest families” have children.
Participants receive employment training, educational instruction for GED or college advancement, counseling, child care and health care.
“Every cent received from the Civic Club will go to local families in need,” said Family Promise volunteer J. B. Flora. “140 homeless families currently live in Cape May County, and there is no homeless shelter here. Family Promise has a very good formula for success, and our program gives people a chance who have no chance otherwise. Family Promise provides services and knowledge that many of us take for granted.”
