SEA ISLE CITY – On Independence Day, nearly 500 children participated in Sea Isle City’s Junior Olympics program, an annual event sponsored by the resort’s Recreation Department that has helped families make July 4th memories for decades. During the free competition, youngsters, ages 3 to 13, sprinted, jumped and threw bean bags in an effort to out-shine their peers and receive medals.
Hosted by 130 volunteers from the Yacht Club of Sea Isle City, this year’s Junior Olympics once again took place at Sea Isle’s Dealy Field. Following a well-organized registration process prior to the games, children were grouped by age and gender before being “shepherded” from event to event by yacht club members. Then, once the winners in each division were determined, Yacht Club Commodore Rich Washart announced the names of the winning athletes as Vice-Commodore Andy Seybold hung first, second and third place medals around their necks. The victorious youngsters then each had a “moment of glory” while standing on a three-tiered victory platform as family members snapped photos and shouted cheers.
“Each year, towns across the nation have a variety of July 4th events for children, but this is one that parents seem to enjoy just as much as their kids,” said Jamie Mulholland, a former YCSIC commodore and co-chair of the yearly Junior Olympics. “Children love the competitive atmosphere of the Junior Olympics – plus they get some exercise and they learn about good sportsmanship.”
