SEA ISLE CITY– In Sea Isle City, where the American spirit is alive and well, a special Patriot Day Memorial Service was held at the resort’s recently-renovated Veterans Park in honor of the many lives lost on September 11, 2001. The annual 9-11 ceremony attracted hundreds of residents and visitors, who prayed, sang patriotic songs and listened to words of encouragement from community leaders.
To begin the ceremony, a brigade of fire engines, ambulances and other emergency response vehicles arrived at Veterans Park at 9:30 a.m.with sirens blaring. Moments later, a color guard from Sea Isle City VFW Post 1963 silently led Mayor Leonard Desiderio and other dignitaries to the park’s viewing area as members of Sea Isle City’s police department, ambulance corps and fire department stood nearby at attention.
Following opening comments from Mayor Desiderio, brief speeches were also offered by Cape May County Freehold Director Daniel Beyel, County Clerk Rita Marie Fulginiti, County Sheriff Gary Schaffer and VFW Commander Charles Haines, who each stepped to the podium in honor of those who lost their lives nine years ago. Additionally, Deacon Liam O’Clisham of Saint Joseph Catholic Church offered an Invocation and Benediction, and Veteran Russell Briggs of Sea Isle City led the crowd with a-capella versions of The National Anthem, Taps and God Bless America.
“The next time a terrorist act is stopped, it will most likely be due to the actions of regular citizens like yourselves,” Desiderio said to the crowd in his closing remarks. “If you think something is wrong, don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and report it. Keep in mind that it was local vendors in New York City who stopped a terrorist-bomber earlier this year.”
