SEA ISLE CITY – Boy Scout Troop 76, based in Sea Isle City, recently enjoyed a three-day bus trip to the Washington D.C. area, where they toured our nation’s capital and participated in a unique experience at Arlington National Cemetery.
The scout’s journey included a visit to the Air and Space Museum Annex at Dulles Airport, where they marveled at the Enola Gay B-29 Bomber, the prototype space shuttle Enterprise, and the Apollo 11 command module, which made the first manned landing on the moon. Troop 76 also toured the Holocaust Museum and the White House, making stops in the executive mansion’s East Room, Red Room, Diplomatic Reception Room and State Dining Room. However, the most notable part of the trip included an afternoon at Arlington National Cemetery, where Scout Troop 76 had the honor of placing a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns.
According to Troop 76 Advancement Chairman Jim English, who has been associated with the troop since 1973, the scouts will more than likely always remember their visit to Arlington.
“We reported to the Sergeant of the Honor Guard and were instructed with the courtesies involved in the ceremony,” said English. “The four scouts selected to place the wreath remained with the sergeant, while the rest of the troop and leaders took their places at the left of the tomb. Precisely at 3:15 p.m., the ceremony commenced and our scouts placed the wreath while everyone came to attention with a hand salute. This was followed by a military bugler sounding Taps.”
The four scouts chosen to place the wreath at the tomb were Senior Patrol Leader Michael Cardinale, John S. Mazurie III, Charles Poole and Robert Craft. There were also twelve other scouts on the trip, as well as 18 troop leaders and family members.
“By far, the most memorable part of our trip was the honor granted to Troop 76 of placing a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns,” added English. “Needless to say, memories were made that will last a lifetime.”
Led by Scoutmaster Mike Jargowsky, Boy Scout Troop 76 is a very active group that enjoys skiing trips, outings to rifle ranges (under the direction of a certified firearms instructor), camping trips and other excursions. They meet on Fridays at 5:30 p.m. inside the Sea Isle City Public School; new members are always welcome. Young men, age 11 and up, who live in Sea Isle City, Avalon, Stone Harbor, Ocean View and the surrounding area, are invited to join.
