WILDWOOD CREST – A determined Boy Scout from Troop 73 that meets at the West Cape May Fire Hall is planning to refurbish the existing flower beds and flagpole monument area at Crest Memorial School for his Eagle Scout project.
At 13 years of age, and an eighth-grader at Crest Memorial School, Corbin Menz-Gentzow is one of the youngest scouts to begin working on this highest Boy Scout rank. Most scouts are 16 or 17 years old before they start their projects.
Menz-Gentzow has a vision that he summed up in his concept paper, “As I renovate the flagpole, I would like to honor the Wildwood Crest residents who have served our country and alumni of Philip P. Baker/Crest Memorial by adding engraved pavers. The pavers around the flowerbed will have the name of the servicemen/women and what branch they served in.”
Mother Claudia Gentzow explained that her son wants to tie together two flower beds by having fellow scouts and other volunteers remove existing concrete around the flagpole, and replace that concrete with paver stones that honor the name of each of the alums who served their country from Crest Memorial School (which was previously Phillip Baker).
Additional landscaping will finish the overall effect.
Menz-Gentzow added that alumni or current students would also be able to add a brick with their name to help finance the project.
Menz-Gentzow asked that anyone wishing to help finance the project can show their support by donating bricks that cost $100 each. He hopes that years after graduation from Crest Memorial, people who have attended the school will always be remembered as both veterans and supporters of the monument to those who have served.
