WILDWOOD – Two Wildwood Middle School mibsters (marble shooters) earned Sportsmanship Awards after participating in the 93rd annual National Marbles Tournament during the week of June 20-24.
My’Air Henry and Kevin Cruz (seventh-grade students) were recognized during the annual Hall of Fame program and induction event held at the Greater Wildwood Chamber of Commerce June 24. Both recipients received plaques, and each won $500 scholarships to be applied to college.
“Winners of the Sportsmanship Awards are voted upon by the referees during preliminary play,” stated Matt Corley, assistant tournament director, and a member of the National Marble Tournament Committee in a release. “It was a clean sweep and the first time that Wildwood kids had ever won these awards.”
The local tournament is sponsored by the 21st Century Community Learning Center Program. This was the fourth year of involvement with the national competition, sending four competitors to represent the district.
Kevin Cruz finished four games shy of making it into the top eight spots, which would have allowed him to compete in the semi-finals. Out of a field of 26 boys and 26 girls, the other Wildwood mibsters ended in the following places:
Paige Springer (tied for 17th place), My’Air Henry (19th place), and Oscar Sanchez (three-way tie for 20th place).
Also, the Wildwood team participated in a live broadcast with CBS3 reporter Pat Gallen June 21, which aired during the early morning news program.
The Wildwood Marbles team is coached by Betty Harshaw and Jerry Sieber.
