WEST CAPE MAY — The West Cape May Board of Education announced that Dominick Potena has been appointed Interim Superintendent for the 2010-2011/2011-2012 school years.
Potena served as the Superintendent of Schools for the Margate City School District from July 1982 to June 2009.
In assuming that position, Potena brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to an excellent school district, and made it only more so over 27 years of leadership through his commitment to the highest standards for his students and staff.
Potena has enjoyed a career full of many accomplishments. He led the way for $24 million in new school construction and renovations for the two existing schools. Additionally, the new state-of-the-art Performing and Fine Art Center is utilized by both the school and the community for assemblies and plays throughout the entire year.
Potena was one of the first superintendents in the state to recognize the need for and value of solar energy. He sought and found a way to equip all of his buildings with solar panels at no cost to the taxpayers of Margate. The savings realized so far are in the hundreds of thousands of dollars received through solar renewable energy credits.
The New Jersey Association of School Administrators named Potena New Jersey’s “Superintendent of the Year” in 2009. In addition to his responsibilities in West Cape May, Potena also supervises student teachers for William Stockton College of New Jersey.
Following his notification of the position, Potena stated that he looks forward to “making a difference” at West Cape May. He will succeed William J. Flynn as Interim Superintendent.
