WEST CAPE MAY — On Wed., April 20, 2016, representatives from Slow Food South Jersey Shore came out to present the first grade with heirloom potatoes to grow in our school garden bed. The first graders were excited to use the gardening tools that we had purchased with the $500 grant that we received from Slow Food. We had gloves for little hands, small shovels and rakes, and small hand tools.
After explaining to the children the origin of each of the potatoes that the Slow Food members brought, including a fingerling and a bodega red, the first graders dug a long trench on either side of the bed. The extra soil was left as a mound in the middle. Each of the children planted a piece of potato and covered it with soil. As the potatoes grow we can cover the bottom of the stem with soil from the mound to get more potatoes.
The first graders worked fast and furiously and each child had his/her own style of digging and planting! Many earthworms and several grubs were discovered. The first graders will be caring for the bed for the rest of the year.
