Third Graders Remember Troops

Third Graders Remember Troops

By Johanna Hovik

COLD SPRING – For the past two weeks, students from Maud Abrams Elementary school in Lower Township have been collecting gift supplies and creating cards for our troops overseas.
Anna Thompson’s third grade class gathered with a representative of the South Jersey Freedom Fighters Dec. 4 to donate their goods. Rob Seitzinger from Freedom Fighters met with the class, and the children presented him with 1,247 donated items that will be sent to U.S. troops stationed in Afghanistan.
The youngsters shouted out items they collected such as toiletries, beef jerky, pencils, snacks and non-chocolate candy.
The children proudly waved hand-written cards which not only thanked the troops but wished them a Merry Christmas and safe return.
When asked how many children had relatives or know someone in the military, well over half the children raised their hands, which made this collection drive even more meaningful.
Thompson’s students have the holiday spirit; they enjoyed the drive and the idea of giving so much. They will be doing more community-based events including visiting seniors to spread cheer.
Collected items from Maud Abrams Elementary School will be shipped overseas along with cards collected at the Middle Township Harvest Festival and the Wildwood Family Holiday Celebration to be held at the Wildwoods Convention Center Dec. 12.
Anyone with relatives in the military, currently deployed overseas, can email their addresses to the Freedom Fighters  at reedomfightersusa@comcast.net  to have a package sent to them.
Money for shipping and handling are raised through donations and can be sent to: PO BOX 311, Cape May Court House, N.J. 08210.
