Students Provide CORE Services to Seniors

By Ray Rebmann

DENNISVILLE- Helping others is the CORE element for a service-oriented group of Dennis Township Middle School students that meets after school every few weeks to plan, coordinate and carry out Community Outreach Events.
One of its recent efforts involved creating ‘Blackout Boxes’ for township senior citizens. With winter storm season approaching, electricity sometimes isn’t a sure thing. Students agreed that a storm survival kit was just the answer. The ‘Blackout Boxes’ they devised include bottled water, flashlights and batteries, candles and matches, a roll of toilet paper and a few granola bards to snack on. The items, donated by district families, would be a small way they could help others and give back to their community.
CORE members walked from the Dennis Township Middle School on Academy Road to the Dennis Township Senior Center on Petersburg Road on a crisp autumn afternoon in mid-November. There, they presented their ‘Blackout Boxes’ to a group of Dennis seniors gathered for their monthly luncheon meeting.
Maddie Justice, an 8th grader, spoke on behalf of the group and explained the boxes to the seniors.
“We wanted you to know we were thinking of you,” Maddie said. “And we hope that the items in these boxes will come in handy if there’s a storm.”
Lisa String and Alexis Flack, school staff advisers to CORE are pleased with their student charges and the outcome of the ‘Blackout Boxes’ event.
“It’s really important for our young people to interact with their community in a positive way. It’s so easy to think ‘me,’ so we want to encourage them to think ‘we’ instead.”
CORE is already working forward to its next event, ‘Warm Hearts’ and invites members of the Dennis Township community to participate. If interested in supporting ‘Warm Hearts,’ please drop off donated hats or pairs of gloves, which will be bundled together with Valentines and distributed in February to homeless residents of the area or those who could just use a warm thought.
