SEA ISLE CITY – First-graders from the Sea Isle City Public School recently participated in a special “Thanksgiving Feast” that incorporated lessons from their Language Arts, Health and Social Studies classes. The gathering, which took place at the school on November 22, followed a series of lessons the taught the students about the landing of the May Flower, the first Thanksgiving and how we celebrate the holiday today.
With a bevy of spectators looking on, including parents, grandparents and School Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Taylor, the students donned Pilgrim’s hats and began reciting what makes them feel thankful. Afterwards, the youngsters and their guests enjoyed a traditional Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings.
According to SICPS Principal Nicholas Salvia, who also attended the gathering, the event was a hands-on learning experience as well as an opportunity for the students to understand the concept of gratitude.
“The feast focused on several aspects of their lessons,” said Salvia. “The children learned about the first Thanksgiving and they also helped prepare some of the meal – so not only was it a lesson in social studies, which included the meaning and context of Thanksgiving, but is also had a home-economics perspective. The broader notion of giving thanks was also incorporated, and many of the students mentioned how thankful they are for their families, their teachers and even their physical possessions. We feel it was a memorable occasion for them, which they will recall for many years to come.”
