West Cape May
The Atlantic City Electric Grant was awarded to West Cape May Elementary School teachers Mrs. Paige Calabro and Ms. Amy Stoner for their joint collaboration in science for grades 3-6. This grant will allow students to become aware of and familiar with energy use at home and school, and will include a guest visit from Cambria Solar and a local environmentalist. Students will engage in learning activities such as making solar powered cars and windmills, generators, and researching alternative energy sources including renewable and fossil fuels.
Groups will debate findings on energy resources and identify the most cost-effective for the environment. Students will visit the ACUA to tour the wind farm, solar array, and landfill. The project will culminate with a presentation of findings for the entire school community.
Woodbine
The Woodbine Elementary School is the proud recipient of a $10,000.00 Mustard Seed grant award from St. Mary Episcopal Church of Stone Harbor, New Jersey. The Mustard Seed Grant funds will be used to purchase school uniform items for Woodbine ES families who may be in need. Funds will go towards the purchase of school uniform shirts, pants and sweatshirts as well as other clothing items for younger students in the school district.
Another portion of the Mustard Seed grant will be directed towards improving the dental health of the school’s students through the reimbursement of costs associated with visitations from the Mobile Dentist Unit. A small segment of the grant will be directed towards the purchase of raincoats, bike helmets and alarm clocks; items that will boost student attendance.
Woodbine Peer Leadership Team in collaboration with the Woodbine PTA will develop a plan to collect gently used school uniform items in receptacles purchased by the grant; then offer a Uniform Exchange Day during the school year. Funds from the Mustard Seed Grant will also be utilized to place a washer/dryer unit in school to assist in the recycle of dress code approved clothing for the school uniform project.
Finally, the Mustard Seed grant award will fund the start up costs associated with Woodbine Elementary School’s first school store. The store will also sell gently used uniform clothing items along with school materials and supplies.
Mrs. Jackie Merollo, Peer Leadership and Student Council Adviser, Mrs. Margaret Benson, Math Teacher and Mrs. Erika Himstedt, School Nurse, will coordinate the Mustard Seed Grant activities in conjunction with input and evaluation from the school’s Health and Safety Team.
Superintendent/Principal, Lynda Anderson-Towns stated, “We are really thankful for St. Mary Episcopal Church’s Mustard Seed foundation committee’s desire to assist in providing funds that address providing school uniforms for some of our struggling families.” She added, “We know that it raises our students’ self esteem and they are more likely to consistently attend school when the basics, like the appropriate dress code clothes items, are available to start the year – everyone starts on the same page.”
