Dennis Township
Students in the Dennis Township School District have been showing their love lately; that is, a love of words and places.
The Spelling Bee Championship was held February 9, between three students who won their grade divi-sions on January 22. Natalie Arch was the winner of the 3rd/4th division, with the word “sculpture.” Char-les Coulter was the 5th/6th champion, spelling “agri-culture” correctly. But it was Stephanie Miller, victor of the 7th/8th division, who was the championship winner today with a perfectly spelled “straightfor-ward.” DT Middle School Language Arts teacher, Cindy Leatherwood, who offered enthusiasm and encouragement to all participating students in the Bee, monitored the championship round.
Another lover of learning, Mickayla Ritzler, was the winner of the 7th/8th grade National Geographic Bee for Dennis Township. After defeating the students with the highest scores in other 8th grade home-rooms, Mickayla then had to take on John Gregory, winner of the 7th grade. She won by correctly identi-fying Greece as Europe’s largest exporter of cotton.
After her victory, Mickayla took a written test that will be scored by the folks at the National Geographic Society. Social Studies teachers Alexis Flack and Rick Champion, monitors of the NGB, wish her luck with her scores so that she might be eligible to participate in the state National Geographic Bee later in the year.
While love is most definitely in the air this Valen-tine’s Day no matter where you are, here in Dennis Township our students love words and places all year long.
Middle Township
Congratulations to the Middle Township High School Interact Club and the Mid-Jersey Cape Rotary Club for a great example of leadership in the community. These two groups generated $1000, that has been given to the district for a water project in Guatemala.
The donation from the Middle Township High School will purchase 20 Bio-Sand Filters to purify water. Each filter will purify water for thousands of people.
It is safe to say that through their Service Above Self attitude they will make a huge difference for roughly 20,000 people. We know that unsafe water kills roughly 5,000 children each and every day.
