Eighth graders Christopher Gibson, and Thomas Henry placed as top students in the region for 8th grade and Rory McDermott placed second for top students in the region for 6th grade. The 8th graders received a plaque for their effort.
Several students from Bishop McHugh Regional School were among the nearly 150,000 students worldwide to participate in the Math Olympiad Program. They participated in a series of five monthly contests of 5 problems each, from November to March, and weekly practice sessions under the guidance of Mrs. Diane Bruesehoff. Mrs. Bruesehoff taught the children to use and apply critical and creative problem solving skills and strategies.
Eighth grader Alex Sakena placed in the top 10% for Math Olympiad at the Middle School level. Alex received a trophy and a silver pin for his efforts. The silver pin is awarded to those in the 90th – 97th percentile overall. Tom Henry and Aidan Sorensen were also recognized and awarded patches for their efforts in scoring in the top 50% percentile.
Cape May County Special Services
What do you get when you take a group of 8th graders, add them to a group of residents at the Vineland Veterans Memorial Home, and mix in some dirt, seeds, plants, and hand-painted clay pots? You get lots of friendship, connection, and fun! As part of the Cape May County Special Services School District’s “CAPE KIDS CARE” service learning program, Ocean Academy Teacher Valerie Reif’s class combined their skills in science, creative arts, and social skills to “Plant Seeds of Friendship” with the veterans. The students and residents had friendly chats as they completed their gardening projects together. Judging from the smiles and laughter from young and old alike, the day of kindness and caring was a big success!
