Bishop McHugh
Students in preschool through grade 8 were recognized for embodying the Gospel value of Kindness at Bishop McHugh Regional Catholic School. Kindness is defined as practicing benevolence and loving attitude toward others. The Fruit of the Spirit awards are presented monthly to students who exhibit the attributes of a Christian life: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
Recipients of the award were Jason Christopher, Landon Tozour, Rebecca LaSane, Alex Covarrubias, Erin McMahon, Clarence Smith, Christopher Gehman, Clyeth Panesso, Grace Gehman, Hannah Lashley, Tyler Cruz and Keith Palek.
Cape May City
On May 29, the students and staff at Cape May City Elementary School celebrated the school’s 50th Anniversary. The classes participated in an assembly which featured students reading essays they had written to the students of 2065, dancing and singing to music from the past 50 years, a slideshow of old magazine covers that students designed, and a whole lot of fun. Kindergarten students and first grade students sang “ABC” by the Jackson Five.
Cape May Tech
May 8 six students from Cape May Tech High School Culinary Arts team competed at the 4th Annual Food Challenge at Caesar’s Atlantic City.
The team trained in cross content learning with Chef Dave Masterson, Culinary Arts Instructor, and Mr. Daniel Takayama’s, chemistry teacher and sushi expert. The team entered the 2015 New Jersey Association of Counties (NJAC) County Vocational-Technical Schools Cook-Off, which was held as part of the NJAC Annual Conference at Caesars Atlantic City.
Teams were required to prepare 400 samples of an appetizer or hors d’oeuvre which could be consumed without the use of a knife, on a budget of $500 or less. Teams were also required to decorate their stations. The Cape May Tech team created an Ice Sculpture for their display center piece.
The Cape May Tech students began planning for the event in late February. The students had to consider the demographics of the conference attendees, food cost, eye-appeal, texture, taste and location of the contest. The students did not have access to a kitchen.
The team decided on maki-sushi (rolled sushi). Team members Emily Farschon, Eve Ulbrich, and Jacob Williams carved a 300 pound block of clear ice into a sushi boat replica. The students were guided by Advisory Council member and professional ice carver Doug Gomersall.
Chef Dave Masterson expressed, “The result of the culinary students planning, dedication, hard work and determination was rewarding.” The student’s earned People’s Choice Gold for their Station Display and People’s Choice Silver for taste.
Recently, Cape May Tech students in various Career/Technical Education classes displayed artwork and design projects to students, faculty, families, friends and the community.
Participating classes included: Advertising Design and Commercial Art, Agriscience and Horticultural Technology, Art History, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Early Childhood Development, Early Childhood Development Lab School, Entertainment Production, Foods Production/Commercial Foods, Natural Sciences, Pre-Engineering, and Travel/Tourism and Event Planning. The winners of the senior show category for Advertising Design and Commercial Art include: 1st place– Zamary Lopez, of Woodbine; 2nd place – Macie Hawthorne, of Wildwood Crest; 3rd place – Dori Davidson, of Dennisville; and Honorable Mention- Julia Scott, of Wildwood.
