School Days 5.21.14

By Herald Staff

The Cape Atlantic School Counselor Association hosted its annual Awards Dinner at Harbor Pine Golf Club in Egg Harbor Township on May 24. Six area high school seniors received $1,500 each for submitting an essay describing how a school counselor has influenced his/her life in a positive way. They gave specific examples about how their counselors helped them make important decisions, provided support in a critical time, or assisted in developing self-understanding and self-acceptance.
Cape Christian Academy
Few can recall when Cape Christian Academy last had a baseball team, but, if there ever was a sports resurrection story, this is the one!
“Out of the ashes”, a handful of interested JV boys, not yet enough for a team, had a vision to play again. Board President and interim Athletic Director, Jack Leisenring said, “If you can get together nine boys, I’ll get you a coach.” Soon after, several other boys came forward to make the magical number. And, true to his word, Mr. Leisenring provided a coach.
Coach George Katity, with over 30 years experience in athletics and Christian education, notably an important fixture in the history of CCA, volunteered to lead this rebuilding program. So desirous was he to bring baseball back to Cape Christian, he purchased the team’s uniforms.
CCA nurse and parent of one of the players, Debi Papperman, said, “I’ve never seen so much enthusiasm”. During the games, excellent teamwork is evident, with no shortage of encouragement between each player. If someone drops a ball in play, another is apt to say, “Don’t worry about it. Shake it off!” “They are just so happy to be out there. When they get a run, they think its a million dollars!” says Papperman.
Cape Christian Academy is excited about what the future will bring as they anticipate the completion of their first gymnasium and the new opportunities it is certain to bring!
Middle Township
Last week, Julie Moore’s third grade class, with the help of fellow teacher, Nicole DelCorio, managed to pull off a surprise baby shower.
Mr. & Mrs. Moore, along with son, Lucas, are expecting twin girls this summer. Parents sent in treats, and the students went in on a gift. A fun time was had by all, and the children were proud of their ability to keep a secret.
Wildwood
The top ten students in Wildwood High School Class of 2014 will all be attending post-secondary schools. Members of the Warrior Nation will take their smarts to institutions of higher learning throughout the United States.
“This group of seniors has been successful in so many ways,” said Wildwood High School Principal Christopher Armstrong. “They are involved in community organizations, extra-curricular activities and family activities. They have done all these things while continuing to excel in the classroom.”
This September will find Shelby Thornton at Rowan University; Mackenzie Huber at Pennsylvania State University; Nicole Toland at William Patterson College; Devon Bradshaw at Atlantic Cape Community College on a full scholarship; Sarah Jakel at Sierra College in Nevada; Natalie Woollerton at Caldwell College; Megan Irwin at Rowan University; Ziy’airea Bryant at East Stroudsburg University; and Josh Leon Gabriel at Atlantic Cape Community College.
“These students represent the excellent education that Wildwood High School offers all its students,” said Mayor Ernie Troiano, Jr. The City of Wildwood wishes them much success in their academic pursuits.”
“We wish them luck at college and in the future,” Armstrong said. “They will be missed at WHS.”
Woodbine
Pastor Thomas Dawson of the First Baptist Church of Woodbine presented Woodbine Elementary School with a $3000.00 check to the school for its Special Education program. The First Baptist Church of Woodbine held its second annual Autism Walk in April with over 150 participants. The church shared the funds raised from the Autism Walk between Cape May County Special Services School District and Woodbine Elementary School.
Members of Woodbine Elementary Board of Education, the Superintendent and teaching staff participated in the Autism Walk as a part of the “Team Victoria Lilly”. “Victoria Lilly” is the career name for Victoria Turner, a kindergarten student at Woodbine Elementary School who has begun a modeling career.
During a short school presentation, Pastor Thomas Dawson thanked Lt. Pearson, Station Commander of the Woodbine State Police Barrack, for providing traffic control during the Autism Walk event and he added, “ The congregation of First Baptist Church of Woodbine wanted to support the education of the children in their community.”
In other Woodbine news, Mayor William Pikolycky is pleased to announce that Woodbine’s annual “Student Government Day” was held on May 9 at the Woodbine Municipal Complex.
Members of the eighth grade students from Woodbine Elementary School, accompanied by teachers Steven Schleckser and Margaret Benson, spent the morning at Borough Hall learning about the workings of their local municipal government.
Monserrate Gallardo, who serves as Woodbine’s Planning and Zoning Board Secretary and Secretary/Treasurer of the Woodbine Municipal Utilities Authority, discussed issues in a wide variety of Planning and Zoning issues, described the workings of the WMUA does, and, as a Certified Municipal Court Administrator, spoke about court- and law- related matters, and reminding the students they are the Borough’s future.
Borough Webmaster Bernard Sypniewski, who is a retired Computer Science teacher and also a retired attorney, echoed Ms. Gallardo’s concerns on the students and their futures and discussed the information accessible through the municipal website.
Lisa Garrison, Municipal Tax Collector/ Municipal Clerk/Municipal Registrar, and Assessor and CFO Jack Miller explained how the functions of their offices interact in the essential workings of municipal government.
Each student was presented with a certificate of attendance, and a Greater Woodbine Chamber of Commerce echoed Ms. Gallardo’s concerns on the students and their futures.
