Bishop McHugh
Students in preschool through grade 8 were recognized for embodying the Gospel value of Patience at a special Mass concluding Catholic Schools Week on January 30 at Bishop McHugh Regional Catholic School. Patience is defined as showing tolerance and fortitude toward others, even accepting difficult situation without making demands or conditions. The Fruit of the Spirit awards are presented monthly to students who exhibit the attributes of a Christian life: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
Bishop McHugh Regional Catholic School is a PreK-8 regional school in Cape May County with a student-centered curriculum grounded in the Gospel values. Cape Christian Academy held their first annual “Souper Bowl Saturday” fundraiser on January 31 at the Tabernacle United Methodist Church in Erma. It was an overwhelming success due in large part to an amazing group of volunteers, cooks, musical entertainers, some of which featured our students, and community participants. CCA would like to recognize the church for the donated space, The Lighthouse Church praise band for their music and sound system, the Cape Island Baptist choir for their beautiful hymns, Mary Beth Clark and Dance Dynamics for their worship dance and Andrea Maher for signing her new book “Slammed”.
Divided by three categories; chili, chowder and other, 19 cooks representing local churches presented their soups for tasting and judging. The best overall soup was “Potato Leek with Bacon” made by Ron Panczner from First Assembly of God in West Cape May. He received a perpetual trophy to be rotated each year among the winning churches. The best in chili went to the women’s group from New Life Church and the best “other” category went to Shirley Stefanovicz from Cape Island Baptist for her Italian Wedding Soup.
The proceeds from this event went to the CCA Scholarship Fund, which helps make Christian education affordable for those families needing assistance. “Not only was it a great way to raise money but it was also a wonderful unifying event for the community”, says school representative. The resounding consensus, “We’re going to have to do this again next year!”
