Bishop McHugh
Bishop Dennis J. Sullivan of the Diocese of Camden made a special visit to Bishop McHugh Regional Catholic School on September 17, 2014 to start off the school year with a prayer service.
The Bishop led the students, staff and parents in the service, where he welcomed them back to school and asked about highlights of their summer. He encouraged students to do their best work this year, and importantly to treat each other with kindness.
Students presented him with gifts, including tickets to the upcoming golf outing on September 26, and his favorite local chowder from Rick’s Seafood. The Bishop gave Principal Tom McGuire a keepsake of the Blessed Mother, to be displayed at the school.
Following the service, the Bishop visited each classroom, taking the time to talk to students about their studies. Students presented cards, sang songs and recited poems. The older grades lined up to sign the alma mater as the Bishop was leaving.
Bishop Sullivan is the spiritual leader of the approximately 475,000 Catholics within the Diocese of Camden. A native New Yorker, he previously served as the auxiliary bishop for the New York Archdiocese. He has worked and volunteered in some of the poorest areas of Manhattan and the South Bronx. Fluent in Spanish, he also studied and volunteered in the Dominican Republic.

Dennis Township
Dennis Township School District students and teachers celebrated Patriot’s Day this year by teaming up to show their love for the first responders in Dennis Township. While teachers baked various goodies like cookies and brownies, students of all grades made cards and brought in prepackaged snacks.
Once collected, the cards and snacks were divided up and delivered to the first responders of Dennis Township, including the Dennisville, Ocean View and Belleplain Fire Companies; the Belleplain Rescue Squad; and the New Jersey State Police at the Woodbine Barracks.
Organizing the effort was well worth it, explains Kim Holman, 4th grade teacher and chair of the Dennis Township Education Association Pride Committee. “We had a lot of students and teachers participating in this and the firefighters, ambulance teams and state police who received these treats and cards loved it,” Holman states. She notes that the Pride Committee received some very heartfelt thank you messages from the recipients, including one she shared with her colleagues via email.
“We felt it was important to not just recognize but demonstrate in some way our appreciation for the jobs that these men and women do on a daily basis and we thought this was a great way to get our students to be a part of it as well,” Holman explains.
The DTEA Pride Committee is made up of teachers in the district working to develop and strengthen relations between the school and the community through various events and programs held throughout the school year.
The committee members are Holman, speech therapist Kelli Turner, basic skills teacher Holly Robinson, 5th grade teacher Jeannette Riggitano, 1st grade teacher Greta Liston, and 3rd grade teacher Megan Christy. The Pride Committee’s next event is Trunk or Treat in October.
