Sandman Consolidated School celebrated Read Across America with many interactive activities. On March 1, 2012, the entire school joined together to hear two Dr. Seuss stories, My Many Colored Days, read by Patti Healy Tomlinson, and The Lorax.
On March 2, students were challenged to break a nationwide record of over 2 million Accelerated Reader Tests taken in one day. They did it! American students shattered the record with over 3 million tests taken. Students of Sandman contributed 992 of those tests. March 5 was a day dedicated to poetry. Students picked poems, practiced the poems, and then performed for classes throughout the school. Poetry Breaks were a welcome interruption to the students’ daily routine. Parents and community readers were invited into the school on March 6 to be mystery readers in the classrooms.
On Wacky Wednesday, March 8, students honored Dr. Seuss and other authors who use silliness and humor to entice readers. Students were encouraged to dress in their craziest outfits. Smiles and laughter filled the halls. Sandman ended the week and a half long celebration with visitors. Students from Mitnick and Maud Abrams came to visit and share stories. Sandman students prepared ahead of time so that they could read fluently and with expression. When the younger visitors came, students became “the teachers” and completed a reading lesson and read aloud with their visitors. Sandman students were pleasantly surprised with a Reader’s Theatre performance by Mrs. Oleksiak-Hall’s third grade class. Interm Superintendent, Joe Cirrinicione, made a guest appearance and returned to his roots as a teacher by sharing a read aloud with students. Children and adults, alike, had fun all week long celebrating books and immersing in the joy of reading.
