MTHS Reaches Out to Red Cross

By Herald Staff

Middle Township High School students have been reaching out to others by emptying their own pockets. Beyond the 174 pints of blood that were donated by students and staff at the high school during their recent blood drive, students and faculty also contributed $1520 to the Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund.
“The blood drive is such an important activity due to the vital nature of the cause. There is such a low blood supply in the county, and this is an opportunity for the students to truly give back to their community.
The ARC states that one pint of blood can save up to three lives. The donors leave the blood drive knowing that they’ve made a difference that can save lives,” said Student Council advisor Larissa Snyder.
Members of the Red Cross Club manned coin drops during the entire week of the blood drive in order to raise both funds for and awareness of the situation in Haiti.
Tracy Nagel, school nurse and advisor for the Red Cross Club, said, “I was so proud to see the incredible turnout to donate at the Blood Drive from our staff and students and to see their generosity in helping Haiti.” The staff of the school also had a dress down day fundraiser for the cause.
Pamela Grites, Executive Director of the Southern Shore Chapter of the American Red Cross gladly accepted the check, given in memory of former MTHS nurse Kate Corcoran, from the officers of the clubs.
The money will support emergency relief and recovery efforts to help those people affected by the earthquake in Haiti. Assistance provided by the American Red Cross may include deploying personnel, sending relief supplies, and providing financial resources.
In the words of sophomore Theresa Flacco, “The coin drop for Haiti was important to our school because the people lost everything they own. The donation to the Red Cross provide much needed necessities to help the people with things like food, clean water, and shelter. In helping organize the blood drive, we saved lives. That’s Awesome!”
