COURT HOUSE – Four teams of aspiring teen “legal eagles” are locked in courtroom battle as the 2016 round of Mock Trial competitions is waged in Superior Court.
Matches take place on Tuesday and Thursday nights, the first was held Jan. 5 in Courtrooms A and B.
The annual event, sponsored by the Cape May County Bar Association, is being coordinated this year by Brett Yore.
Pairs of attorneys serve as judges, weighing the validity of challenges and deciding on objections.
At night’s end Jan. 5 Dan Solt and Eric Garrabrant, who presided over Cape May Tech v. Middle Township High School, the judges decided that Middle won.
Next door, attorneys Dan Kurkowski and Michael Pender presided over Wildwood Catholic v. Lower Cape May Regional, and decided that Lower Cape May Regional won.
Competitions begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Cape May County Courthouse until Jan 21, unless snow mandates rescheduling.
The trials are based on a fictitious murder/self-defense case. A former sniper kills a teenager who enters his home, which was ravished by Hurricane Sandy and is deemed unfit for occupancy.
The public is welcome to observe the trials. Entrance is via the west side as the Route 9 entrance is locked at night.
