COURT HOUSE – Middle Township Middle School (MTMS) recently hosted a diversity assembly at the Performing Arts Center. MTMS students performed small skits that related to a variety of different issues that students go through every day. The event was an opportunity for the student body to come together and celebrate the district slogan, “Diversity is our Strength.”
“This year, the United Young Generation, Diversity Club, Student Council, and some special guests have put together some skits and performances that will show you the true meaning of diversity. We are all different and we all have our own individual talents. This is why we should all be able to be proud to say that in Middle Township, diversity is our strength,” said Student Council President Jordan Severino.
The program included performances from the MTMS cheerleaders and members of the student body. They focused on rumors, cyber bullying and comedy vs. cruelty. The Success Club and United Young Generation also joined the assembly to present a special unity performance for their fellow students.
“We have a great opportunity today to celebrate the diversity of Middle Township. I want us all to think about that. We have a great melting pot here. We have people from all different backgrounds, all different cultures and all different beliefs,” said Principal Jeff Ortman.
At one point during the assembly, students read powerful poems that they had written themselves. The poems focused on the different stereotypes every student can be labeled with, but also focused on the positive and kind characteristics of each student, which helped them to realize that the stereotypes are untrue.
Cheers from the crowd filled the auditorium as students applauded their fellow classmates who had worked up the courage to get on stage and talk about their struggles.
