Magnetic Message Wins Recognition

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE – A team of Peer Leaders from Cape May County Technical High School received commendations for their public service work with Cape Assist. The substance abuse prevention agency hosted a contest to design a refrigerator magnet to promote awareness of the underage drinking laws. The winning design would be created as a refrigerator magnet to be distributed to rental property homeowners and other key target populations to prevent underage alcohol consumption.
This project was a magnet design contest as part of the Peer Leadership Challenge at the conference Cape Assist has each year in November. Students from all schools K-12 were eligible to submit as many designs as they wished. The student-designed art was selected first by peer ranking through various social media outlets, and the top three designs then went to a Cape Assist committee for review. The winning message makes it clear that “It is a criminal offense to serve alcohol to anyone under 21” for the NC21 campaign.
Cape Assist invited the students for recognition at the April 15th Public Policy and Awards breakfast with leaders, legislators, school members and community. The students were each awarded a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from Congressman Frank A. LoBiondo, a Joint Legislative Commendation from New Jersey Senator Jeffrey Van Drew and Assemblymen Matt Milam and Nelson Albano, a certificate of recognition from the Board of Chosen Freeholders, and a Certificate of Honor from Cape Assist.
The student award recipients included Laura Flynn, Ami Adams, Roxanne Geylani and Carly Heminway, along with Peer Leader Advisor, Ms. Kirsten Miller. Freeholder Gerald Thornton participated in the policy breakfast and assisted Kim Mounce, head of Community Initiatives and Cape Assist Director Lynne Krukoski with the presentation of awards. Laura Flynn accepted the recognitions on behalf of her team.
