During the month of October, Lower Cape May Regional High School Resource Officer Michael Perry, of the Lower Township Police Department, instructed 10th grade drivers education students on the effects of alcohol and drug, as well as provided an overview of DWI laws.
During the classes, SRO Perry utilized Fatal Vision Goggles, that simulate the effects of alcohol, to show the students such things as depth perception and hand-eye coordination are affected by alcohol. This was accomplished by having students perform simple tasks; for example, simple balance and coordination tests. The students were first asked to perform these tasks with the goggles, then with them off. Most students were unable to complete the tasks due to the effects of the goggles. This helps to provide the students with an understanding of the dangers of drinking and driving.
The students were also informed of New Jersey Graduated Driver License (GDL) Laws and Restriction, including the fines and penalties for such violations.
