WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Frank A. LoBiondo (NJ-02) has announced that his office is accepting submissions from high school artists across Southern New Jersey for the 2008 Congressional Art Competition, hosted by the U.S. House of Representatives.
“I am pleased to again have my office participate in the annual Congressional Art Competition, which rightly recognizes the ingenuity and creativity of young artists in our communities,” said LoBiondo in a release. “With the winning piece on display for visitors to the U.S. Capitol, I encourage South Jersey high school students interested in art to participate in the competition.”
Submissions must be no larger than 30 inches by 30 inches, and 4 inches in depth, and can be: paintings (oil, acrylics, watercolor etc); drawings (pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, markers); collage (must be two-dimensional); prints (lithographs, silkscreen, block prints); mixed media (use of two or more mediums); computer-generated art; and, photography. Each submitted piece must be accompanied by a signed release form by the artist.
All submissions are due to the Congressman’s Mays Landing office by April 25.
For the month of May, all entries will be on public display at Ivy League Mortgage in Linwood.
On May 16, there will be a reception for the artists and formal announcement of the winners. The winning submission will be displayed for one year in the tunnel connecting the Cannon House Office Building and the U.S. Capitol, which is part of the main tour route of visitors to Capitol Hill.
The second and third place submissions will be displayed in the Congressman’s DC and Mays Landing offices, respectively.
Additionally, this year the first, second and third and honorable mention place winners will be receiving cash awards from the Jan-Ai Scholarship Fund, which approached LoBiondo in order to participate in the annual event.
The fund commemorates the life of local writer, poet and photographer Jennifer Cakert, who died in June 2006.
