WOODBINE — The Kick-Off Assembly for the Mayor’s Book Club at Woodbine Elementary School, held Jan. 30, was an impressive occasion, held in the school’s All Purpose room and attended by grades pre-K through first.
First grade teacher Valerie Newman wrote the choral reading that was used to introduce the kick-off. The Readers’ Theater presentation by grade one was based on the book Alligator’s Loose Tooth by Fay Robinson. Other first grade children read Thomas Comes to Breakfast based on The Railway Series by The Reverend W Awdry.
Dean Claudine Keenan came from Stockton’s School of Education to speak to the assembled students.
Mayor Pikolycky read Watty Piper’s classic The Little Engine That Could.
“I thank the League of Municipalities who collaborating with Stockton College have made this initiative a state-wide example of the importance of early reading,” added Mayor Pikolycky. “Our own branch campus in Woodbine is one more example of how we have become “The Little Borough Who Can”.
Mrs. Newman’s first grade class at Woodbine Elementary was chosen to participate in the New Jersey State League of Municipalities Education Foundation Fifth Annual Mayor’s Book Club which is a partnership with Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. (Stockton College also has a branch campus in Woodbine.)
The cornerstone of this initiative is to engage municipal leaders and their local partners in the development and maintenance of a Mayor’s Book Club that enhances early literacy achievement for first graders.
This innovative model connects the school, parents, and community members, college faculty, and teacher candidates. Mayors become involved in the local schools to highlight the importance of early literacy, and to organize an array of strategies that promote wide reading, literacy engagement, achievement, and collaboration. First graders who read at least eight books between February and May 1 will receive certificates at a Literacy celebration in May. If the students read 1000 books, the school will be given $1,000 to spend on the first grade classroom library.
