DENNIS TOWNSHIP – The halls of the Dennis Township Primary School were bursting with pride during the inaugural “Happy to be a Hawk Week”. This week-long celebration was a way to instill school pride in Dennis Township’s youngest learners. Events and activities integrated components of character education that fostered a positive school climate. Teacher and event organizer, Alison Curvan, explained, “We wanted to devote a week to recognizing the positive attitudes and behaviors that make us proud to be Dennis Township Hawks”. Organizer and teacher, Samantha Matthews went on to say, “We tried to focus on age-appropriate character traits that our young learners could apply to their everyday lives; such as, joy, compassion, responsibility, friendliness, and kindness.”
The week included theme days such as Matching Monday, Teacher Tuesday, and Wacky Wednesday, and the students’ favorite Thoughtful Thursday. On Thoughtful Thursday, individuals and classes were rewarded for their positive attitudes and behaviors. Students enjoyed donut breakfasts, a pizza party, and an ice cream sundae celebration, and various sweet treats. Mrs. Matthews explained that these rewards helped to foster a positive school culture.
The week’s events culminated with “Finale Friday”. On this day, families joined students at school for a musical performance of songs reflecting the week’s themes, a showcase of student work, and a Parent Picnic. During the picnic, the Kona Ice Truck supplied some sweet refreshments, and the PreK students were able to burn off some energy on the Tumble Wheels Bus. Mrs. Curvan stated, “We felt that it was important to include our student’s families because the school and home connection is vital to a child’s academic success”. Mrs. Matthews added, “This was such a positive experience for our school. We have already started planning for next year!”
