ERMA — Michael Laricks went home from Lower Township police DARE Day with a brand new bicycle May 29.
He was among 275 Lower Township sixth graders who participated in the event at Naval Air Station Wildwood museum at the county airport.
Lower Township Patrolman Darren Hickok thanked Nick Elmer of Tuckahoe Bikes for donating a bicycle valued at $500.
The half day event included a rock climbing wall brought in by the National Guard from Ft. Dix, a dunk tank featuring Mr. Herman, Lower Township Schools Behavioral Specialist, touring the aviation and Forgotten Warriors Vietnam museums and Sheriff’s Department K-9 demonstration.
Erma Fire Company demonstrated the Jaws of Life by cutting up a junk car.
Eleven students chosen as DARE Students of the Year were awarded bike helmets: Emily Newton, Montana La Roche, Katelyn Gittle, Destiny Hahn, Brett Hagerty, Jeffery Smith, Matthew Baxter, Jamie Rucher, Clayton Sullivan, Camaris Torres and Michael Laricks.
Hickok said he teaches 133 DARE classes from January to the end of the school year. He said the DARE message is making smart choices.
“Unfortunately if somebody makes a bad choice, it could be final,” said Hickok.
Class topics include marijuana and alcohol use, peer presssure, Internet safety and gangs, he said.
