DAR Announces 2010 History Essay Contest

COURT HOUSE — The DAR has announced its winter 2010/2011 American History Essay Competition.
The competition is open to any student in grades five through eight.. The local chapter of the DAR, the Cape May Patriots, is asking for submissions from interested students attending schools in Cape May County.
Rules for submissions have been mailed out to all the schools in the county, and should be available to students through their school history departments and/or history teachers. The subject for this year’s essay is “Memoirs of Paul Revere.”
• Essay is to be handwritten legibly in ink, typed, or written on a computer/word processor in black ink at no smaller than 12, no larger than 14 point, non-script font. Limited vision students may use Braille, a tape recorder, or very large type; but their submission must be accompanied by a teacher’s or doctor’s letter attesting to special needs.
• The essay must be the student’s own original work.
• Grade 5: 300-600 words. Grade 6, 8: 600-1,000 words.
• Title page must include the following: Title/topic of essay as above; subtitle may be included below main title; Contestant’s full name and address; contestant’s phone number with area code and e-mail address if available; name of contestant’s school if applicable, with grade level included; name of sponsoring DAR chapter; number of words in essay.
Deadline for essays to be delivered to the address below is Dec. 12.
More detail on rules are in the package sent out to schools. If interested students cannot locate anyone in their schools who has received the information package our chapter mailed out, or if they are being home schooled, they can contact: Patricia A. Essays of winning contestants will then be submitted to state level competition, going all the way up to the national level.
