COURT HOUSE – Students in the Baking & Pastry Club at the Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College marked the 100th anniversary of the baking giant Tastykake Feb. 26 with a five-tier celebratory cake featuring the likeness of the iconic confections.
The cake featured the company’s logos throughout the year, plus decorative images of Tastykake delivery trucks and products, including Butterscotch Krimpets and Peanut Butter Kandy Kakes, Snowballs, Dreamies and Honey Buns.
Students who worked on the cake include: Carrie Allsopp of Marmora, Emily Dunn of Berlin, Jamie Eberhardt of Stratford, Somer Gegeckas of Mt. Royal, Renee Harrold of Hammonton, Shannon Kemmerer of Williamstown, Uriya Laster of Northfield, Arielle Masters of Vineland, Akeema Telemaqu of Willingboro, Kyle Timpson of Cape May Court House, and Natasha Rosa of Atlantic City.
Club advisor Chef Educator Mary Theresa “Tree” McCann suggested the project. Her own father, Frank McCann, was a Tastykake driver for 25 years.
Local businesses, including The BakeWorks of Northfield, Sweet Tooth in Egg Harbor City and Cake Studio in Ocean City, supported the initiative by assisting with the cake and providing products.
The club brought the cake to the company’s Philadelphia headquarters Wednesday to display and took a tour of their factory.
Headquartered in Philadelphia, the bakery made 100 cakes on its first day of business. Now, it produces nearly 5 million cakes, doughnuts, cookies and pies daily in a modern facility at the city’s Navy Yard.
