COURT HOUSE– Saturday, October 16th the School Based Youth Program (SBYS) of the Cape May County Technical High School helped students and staff show support for World Hunger Day awareness. A team of SBYS staff, high school students and district staff were at Woodland Village for the “Empty Bowls” event to help support the Community Foodbank of New Jersey on World Hunger Day.
Here’s how it worked: people from the community came out to Woodland Village, located on Route 9 in Swainton, where visitors picked out a beautiful handmade bowl. Visitors contributed a $10 donation for a bowl made by a high school student, and $15 for a bowl made by a professional artisan. Then, the new “bowl owners” took the empty bowl around to the various stations throughout the village where they could sample soups from dozens of local restaurants.
By all reports, the soups were delicious and in the end the entire day’s event raised more than $5,000 in donations! In cooperation with the work of SBYS, Cape May County Technical High School’s Ms. Faith DeLany and her Art History students helped contribute to the cause making dozens of bowls to be sold. In total, Ms. DeLany’s class – along with the SBYS Volunteer Club – provided 103 bowls for the fundraiser.
A total of 17 Cape Tech high school students also came out to volunteer to help make this event a success. The windy day didn’t keep people away, and maybe even contributed to making it great soup-sampling weather. If you couldn’t make it, be sure you don’t miss out on it next year, and you can help battle world hunger, one bowl at a time.
