COURT HOUSE – The Communication Arts career and technical education program of the Cape May County Technical high school received commendations for 16 students in to honor their public service work with Cape Assist. Sponsored by the Cape May County Healthy Community Coalition, Cape Assist was presented with sixteen television public service announcements to deter the abuse of alcohol and other drugs following team meetings with prevention staff and additional research, planning and production.
The student-produced ads delivered anti-drunk driving and anti-underage drinking messages through a variety of production styles. One of the ads was selected to represent Cape May County in the New Jersey Prevention Network (NJPN) “Better Things To Do” campaign against underage drinking. The anti-drunk driving messages included the slogan “Don’t Drink and Drive: I’ll Tell You Why”, provided by Cape Assist.
Cape Assist invited the students for recognition at the April 15th Public Policy and Awards breakfast with leaders, legislators, school members and community. The students were each awarded a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from Congressman Frank A. LoBiondo, a Joint Legislative Commendation from New Jersey Senator Jeffrey Van Drew and Assemblymen Matt Milam and Nelson Albano, a certificate of recognition from the Board of Chosen Freeholders, and a Certificate of Honor from Cape Assist.
The student recipients included Devyn Bader, whose ad was selected to represent the county in the NJPN, Rebekah Burgos, Zachary Casey, Molly Cunningham, Ronald Fay, Kelsey Frazier, Dawn Kennedy, Nathaniel Knight, Michael Krieg, James Louderback, Jamie Marshall, Shannon McDevitt, Courtney Nichols, Stephen Ranalli, Jeffrey Romeo, and Glenn Wescott. Freeholder Gerald Thornton participated in the policy breakfast and assisted Kim Mounce, head of Community Initiatives and Cape Assist director Lynne Krukoski with the presentation of awards.
The anti-underage drinking and anti-drunk driving project will continue as the students of Communication Arts and teacher Nancy Wheeler Driscoll continue to partner with Cape Assist in the public release of additional public service media campaigns, to include print, television, internet and social media. A sneak preview appears in the video clip produced by Cape Tech junior Michael Krieg.
