COURT HOUSE — Cosmetology students from the Cape May County Technical School were recognized at the CMCTS Post-Secondary Graduation Ceremony held on June 16 for a 100 percent pass rate on the New Jersey Cosmetology/Hairstyling Licensing Exam. All students passed the theory portion of the licensing exam on May 5 which made them eligible to take the practical portion of the test on May 16. Students did not know the results until a surprise announcement was made by their instructor, Liz Pastore and teaching assistant, Janis Cafaro during the graduation ceremony. The students did not seem to comprehend the announcement at first but as the news sank in they were obviously joyous. The Cosmetology graduation speaker, Melissa Bakley, chose the title, “Journey to Success” for her speech, which turned out to be a fitting prelude to the announcement.
In addition, two cosmetology students were recognized for their success in the NJ Skills USA Competition held in Somerset County in April. The Skills USA competition is held yearly and students from many career and technical education programs throughout the state compete in rigorous competitions judged by industry leaders. Felicida Williams won the gold medal for the Hairstyling competition and Celena Tropea won the Bronze medal for Esthetics/Make-up application.
The Cosmetology program prepares students for the New Jersey State Cosmetology/Hairstyling licensure exam and for employment in a salon, barber shop or related business. Cosmetology students learn about all phases of professional imaging, hair design, chemical processes, skin care, nail care, multi-cultural practices, related sciences, business principles, product knowledge, and other selected topics. In the last half of the program, students work with the public in a simulated salon environment which enables students to develop manual skills.
The 2016-2017 Cosmetology Program at Cape May County Technical School is scheduled to begin on Sept. 6, 2016. It is a 10-month “twilight” program in session from 1:30-9:30 p.m., Mon.-Thurs. from Sept. through June. The program is open to adult students, who are 18 years of age or older by Oct. 15, 2016, with either a high school diploma or equivalent. Potential applicants are required to meet program criteria on the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) prior to acceptance.
If you are interested in becoming a licensed Cosmetologist, please contact the Adult/Post-Secondary Education Office at the Cape May County Technical School at 380-0243. Don’t wait because time is short!
