NORTH WILDWOOD — The Guidance Office of Wildwood Catholic High School hosted the annual College Fair Sept. 27 with representation from over 60 colleges and universities along the East Coast from Vermont to Florida.
Over a hundred students from county high schools including Middle Township, Lower, and Ocean City attended the free event to find information and ask questions to a live per-son about the colleges they will consider this fall.
“I’m looking for a name because I have good grades and I want to get in to a good graduate school, but it also has to be fun,” Ron Akke, 17, a senior at Middle Township High School told the Herald.
“I found colleges here that I hadn’t considered before.”
Katie Giblin, 17, a senior at Wildwood High who wants to pursue a degree in education, said she plans to apply to four to five schools in the area. She came to the fair hoping to find more information about financial packages. Giblin said her biggest concern as she considers a college — money.
Kirstin Baltuskonis, 17, a senior at Middle Township, said she will probably apply to 10 schools and is most concerned with location and the availability of her major, but also requirements for acceptance.
“I have a low GPA, but many extracurriculars,” Baltuskonis said. “I’m looking for a school that will take that in to consideration.”
Ed Fath, 17, a senior at Wildwood Catholic who is shopping for a school with a strong pre-med program, said he had come to the event to have the opportunity to talk to a representative from a few of the colleges face-to-face.
“It’s better than looking on the Internet,” Fath said. “A great way to check out a lot of schools and once.”
Seniors feeling the weight of looming application deadlines weren’t the only students in attendance.
Dana Horn, 15, a Wildwood Catholic sophomore, said she stopped by the fair to get a head start at looking at colleges.
Nicole Hoffman, 16, Middle Township, sophomore who said she is considering a career in education, told the Herald, “I’m getting ideas so I’m not completely lost when I have to apply.”
Hoffman said the fair gave her the opportunity to consider factors such as distance, availability of parking and majors offered.
Will she return to the college fair next year?
“Probably.”
